Hmmmm....

I've seen the remake of two of those movies, have heard of two more, and haven't even heard of the other two.

Best movie of all time is a huge and subjective call.  I was racking my brain for my pick.

Don't know that I could wittle it down to just one.  One very good movie that springs to mind, tho, is American Beauty - no scooters, but a hillarious performance from Kevin Spacey.

without quad the scene would not be what it is today, come over to england and come to a rally and see, just been to hull and district rally at weekend, have many photos to down load and many quad lovers, gay my ass, whats wrong with gay anyway

Posted by oupa on Thu, 13/07/2006 - 00:08
Gay,ghey,it's all Gay.

New Zealand's scooter scene is more "Good-Bye Pork Pie" meets "Back to the Future" than Quadrophenia.

Posted by Topper on Thu, 13/07/2006 - 07:29
The VISIBLE scene to those

The VISIBLE scene to those that go on rallies and read the moped magazine may be influenced by quadrophenia. But the rest of us were never mods, or anything remotely like it. Watch it without rose tinted glasses on. Its poorly made, poorly cut, terribly acted with the same song played over and over and over.
I could name fifty films that are better than quadrophenia. More, if I wasn't going out in the next ten minutes.
It is embarassing to be associated with such nonsense, just because I own a scooter.

that film

its nearly 30 years old that film  and still being talked about , love it or hate it , its upt the profile of scootering over the years . its so easy it slag of a film that was suposed to be set in the 60's , made on the cheap in the 70's , its a cult film .

on music , take the cotten wool out of your ears , most tracks are by "the who" which do not repeat , one of the best r & b band the world has ever seen and one of the best r & b albums . the only song they got wrong was ... it should have been " i ride a sx scooter with my hair cut short".... not a gs scooter with my hair cut neat . bloody mods.....

Gazzer. All fair comments..

Gazzer. All fair comments.. but being a cult (cheap) film doesn't make it good.
Two Lane Blacktop was/is a cult film. And it's far better acted than Quadrophenia.
And in the poll, the other films aren't cult, and are all much better!

I'm not convinced its upped the profile in a good way. All it's done is to make the public at large think that everyone who rides a Lambretta is a mod. Which is an awful slur on those of us that aren't.

Posted by MattBlack on Thu, 20/07/2006 - 18:05
cult

you surly can not put the mod film up against the others in the same sentence. course the other films are far better acted than mod film , there got mr cane in them for a start . the film was made with unknowns , even sting was a wally in it and an unknown. in the late 70's there was a real low in scootering in the uk and   the film lifted the profile of scootering  which can not be a bad thing . on the down side i for one was a skinhead on a scooter and like a lot of mates hated the fact that they called me a mod  because of  being on a scooter, to this day i still get called one even though i have no ucking hair now{ i'm over it}  anyway , as a 1979  scooter boy i did not see the film till 1982 and thought it carried well   , fights with greasers{ rockers} cloths ect  but i could never get hold of any ruddy drugs so settled for the beer. to a lot of brits it is dear to there hearts because of the hardship they had just owning a scooter , i  for one had so much shit from greasers in the early 80's  just coz i road a ucking scooter. the time zone may be diffrent but the bover was the same.

each to there own i spose but it pisses me off calling a film gay just coz it seems to be the in word or they just don't get the film . if you don't get it fine , but does every sucker have to push the point they do not like it .

just a point of view of course .

Quadrophenia is great!

Both a lammy and a vespa get trashed. It's exercise for the trainspotters amongst us picking out the flaws. Get it in ya eyeballs.

NZ scene different

Quad wasnt too bad given the time lapse, it got the scene quite well.

Unlike most riders of today, in those days a scooter was half a years wages or more, you had only one and you loved it!!! It wasnt a toy/hobby.

And in those days gay just meant happy(Jack)

Where have all the Good Times gone.

on the italian job ,the mini killed the scoot scene as cheap form of transport  in the late 60's  and even inocentti had  a stab at making them for a while.

The genre of the Brit gangster films are often in a quieter way more menacing than the Yank ones.

There were bad ones before Vinnie etc

Didnt know that about Johnny rotten, goetz.

The final theme for the credits of BladeRunner was great synth music.

Gary what was the Sean Bean gangster film where they blow up the Jag?

Do you remember the one where the guy took his flash suit off so as not to get blood on it while dismembering the rival gang boss?

film

cant remember the tittle of the film but loved the part were a guy got chucked out of a 3 story building and  landed on top of a car ,sean bean said he must of #issed someone off then carried on talking as if nothing had happen. hard stuff .

cant see john as jimmy , clean cut and shagging less in the ally  let alone on a lambretta. now that would have  made it a gay film .....

British humour

what is the point..  it is not funny ...although my ex wife could quote monty python and laugh everytime....I thought it silly too silly to be funny ...Pulp Fiction was a memeroble film ...The Love Story saw it when I was 13 .........Mary poppins was great when I was 6 ....It is all relevant of where you are ..if you like Quadrophinia you likely have an alcohol problem or you smoke way too much dope ...or your head has been bashed too many times in too many football brawls.....

lads giving it loads

lovin this joust between you two about quad, its a film that many here and abroad reminise(not a good speller) over a time when they were young free and had loads of fun remember what was going on in the world then and how you felt, you may have to be a certain age or you may not... its not a bad film, how could it be the scoots are lovely..... good bye pork pie right up there with other kiwi brilliance, came a hot friday and bad taste... low budget fun and films to remember just like quad... my favourite film if fight club and not a scooter in sight, would be nice if photos accompanied names on this sight so you could see who you were laughing with, discussing with, getting reved up with(caza n gazza)..

bye for now from london

you would also know who to aim at if you ever came over

I guess .. I was so disapointed in Quad cause I had heard so much hype on it ....I had to drive 25km cause our town video shop didn't have it and once the others where out on loan so drove in twice got a really worn copy of it with lines all over the set then the film was a let down .... I loved trainspotting and I think if I would have seen this film in the 70's at a theatre I  may have different feelings towards it ....

whop needs a good film

whop needs a good film anyway??

i am off films since 2 weeks ago

the reason:

I was in melbourne an got taken to a bar called "Pink"  .... there i witnessed a 2 1/2 hour stage show, 7 drag queens performing "sound of music"

It was like brain wash ... !!!!   don't know if i can ever see any film or show again without them drag queens popping up in my mind .. they ruined it for me for ever

Get Carter

Once I watched the DVD of Get Carter with directors commentary on, it made a whole lot more sense. (I guess it shoulda made sense before that tho...). From the very beginning of the film, the mob is onto him, the assassin that shoots him at the end is sitting across from him on the train.

But that line, quoted in part earlier, always gets me - 'You're a big man but you're out of shape - me, I do this for a job. Now behave yerself'.

And Quad gets better every time I reckon, ever since I first saw it at the Classic in Queen St, double feature with Rude Boy. THe GS (OK, it's not a GS, but it's acting, innit?) lands on the rocks and from the back of the theatre some wag breaks the silence: 'it'll still start first kick'. V. funny.

STEEEEEPPPHH!!!!!! was right up there with Brando's 'STELLLLAAAHHHH!!!

'Mr. F*cking Postman.'

once you know the whole

once you know the whole story behind Quadrophenia , it gets even more interesting.

The Who produced the first album "Quadrophenia" as a rock opera with a picture booklet  inside .. Far more agressive  vibes and ideas and much more controversial approach.

The originl script for the film was based on this idea of a rock opera with 7 lead caracters rather than one

Johnny Rotten was cast for to play Jimmy ..and that was when everything went pearshaped .

Due to Rottens rotten image and behaviour, the BBC refused funding for the original script and casting .. and the whole shabong had to be streamlined and cleaned up.... and funding was still just a fragment of the original budged ..hence the poor quality

The product of this censorship exercise is a ok film with a ok message and no sharp edges or too controversial approach.

a CULT classic for the scooter scene of course and very interesting to look at if you have spent a few years in Uni studying soziology and/or psychology...

.. but it's not the best film ever  (well, for me)

I have to agree with Pork Pie in the top ranks .. i have seen it a few times now and still laugh my a** off every single time... its simple, cheeky, deep and incredible funny

The Rusty Nuts MC had a couple of "pork Pie" runs organised in the past .. that could be an idea for a future Scooter Ride... we are taking our bikes to Invercargill (sometimes spelled with one "l" to save ink) !!!

Talking of Invercargill.... "world fastest Indian" has made it to my ever top 10 list too (which features films like Brasil, Blade Runner, a Clockwork Orange)

Mini -Right

Yes a 200 Lambretta was 200 pounds and a minivan was 350 a saloon 500.

Then the triumph Herald was cheap too.

Those cars stopped scoots as the sole transport of the mass youth crowd. Come to think of it thats what Morcs thread was on partly, Japanese imports have done the same.

Quadrophenia Caza

I dont think you have any idea what you are talking about, I am sorry to say that, but there is so much history and memories associated with that film. Some understand and some dont. Each to there own, but as far as slagging people off and saying they have an Alcohol problem or smoking problem I do not think you can comment. " Caz" is also a term used in the 60's for a "plastic", a fake a wannabie. Just thought you should know that.

Now that the debate has

Now that the debate has nearly finished - didn't see "quad", but I did see Audry Hepburn zapping around Rome on the back of a vespa back in the fifties in "Roman Holiday" and compared that to "Sabrina visits Rome", a relatively new film with races and chases through the streets of Rome on vespas. Well worth a watch.

Personally I like the film just for spotting all the actors who later turned up in Eastenders, The Bill, Boon.....hey it was Ray Winstone's big break so that's one good thing.
