Parking on the footpath

I've always taken parking on the footpath as a given, and tolerated by Council, but never officially endorsed. This afternoon a parking warden asked me what I was doing as I dismounted my steed? One of the rear times I did not park on the footpath, Murphys law it will get knocked over. I was parked at the end of a 10min park zone where it bounded a Taxi rank - the warden then instructed me to park on the footpath - cool, not all wardens suck.

There's been some chat over on KB about this issue too - seems there has been a recent change of heart over at the council as regards bikes parking on the footpath and a few have picked up tickets. There's talk of a mass occupation of car spaces to highlight the stupidity of this idea...

Thankfully, mopeds can legally park on the footpath (that's you tiddlers) and most Wardens don't know the difference between scooters that qualify or not...<touches wood>

Im a mass re-offender of footpath parking.

I even have a cushy carpark in the pay and display undercover car park across the road for free in between 2 columns.  I was once "mistakenly towed" which I found very funny and even got an apology from Tournament.

Scooters really are the best transportation.

Still trying to figure out where motorbikes/scoots are meant to park at Sylvia Park though....

where are the rules on this?

Is it a council bylaw or something that allows mopeds to park on footpaths, but not motorbikes?

Incidentally you are supposed to drive a car to Sylvia Park. Scoots, cycles and walking are for less advanced third world countries.

They had a thing on "Good morning" about scooters parking on the footpath - there is a new guy in the council in charge of infringements that has decided it isnt allowed anymore.

Apparently new scooter only parking bays are going to be located in Ponsonby Rd, K Rd & Parnell I think but the parking tickets will be enforced before these new parking bays are designated.

Go figure.

Re: parking

Tim,

this is becoming a big issue for all of us.

Aperantly a new cowby is in the saddle at the council.

At this stage we are looking into the political approach, meaning
petition and lobbying directly to the person/s in charge.
Thats the way we got the bus lanes opened.

There is talk about getting more scooter/bike parks etc... but until
those are created we need a way of dealiong with our parking dilemma.

Yes, the motyorbike/scooter parking "raid" is a great way of proving
our point ... at this stage i would see into targeting just one
carpark, preferably one where all the council paperstallions park their
cars.

We are not enough bikes to make an impact on to the whole city - but if
we get some media behind us, even making an example at one car park
could have a huge impact.

Important is to do the political groundwork first, so the people in
charge cn see what we are actually going on about.

Any suggestions are welcome!!

You probably would need to pick a particular area, though, for it to have an impact.  Somewhere like Ponsonby Rd was one of the areas where they've acknowledged they need to put in parks might be a good bet.

And it'd pay to notify the media, so they can take pictures and film the cars driving round looking for a spot...

We can also spread the word to simply go "by the book" one by one - means everytime we go somewhere and see a free car park - just use it instead of leaving it to the cars... i'll be happily pay my couple of dollars to make a point

My understanding is that any vehicle with a current rego is legally entitled to use any designated parking space like P10s, P120s or whatever, free or pay/display. I think a scooter and bike take-over of all the vehicle parking - not "car" parking - is a great idea.

Debrief:

A very productive meeting.

Presentation well received. We managed to set one half of the committee at the throats of the other half (whilst we sat quietly watching). Which is good, when knaves fall out honest bikers come into their own. And we now have allies.

After much envenomed invective and reference to standing orders etc, the chairman was obliged to accept an amendment moved by Clr Easte, requiring the GM, Parking (our old friend Mr Tomlinson) to prepare a memo for the committe by the March meeting, detailing what he is doing about motorcycle parking. I will be contacting Mr Tomlinson in the next few days to suggest what he should put in that memo (since we were referred to him by the Committee to get something done!). Clr Easte was seconded by Clr Fryer. Clr Bhatnagar got derailed in silly suggestons about motorcycles paying parking fees, which I said was unworkable, and none of the other councillors were interested in that idea.

The committeee broadly accepted the arguments that motorycles are a GoodThing. And that we should be considered in town planning decisions (that's a big win) . And that more motorcycle parking is needed.

And after we withdrew Clr Miller came out to see us and Crashe detailed the exploits of the infamous parking Warden 71, and Clr Miller has offered to sort out the said parking warden.

We also have the committees approval to hit up the community boards to provide parking spaces in suburban areas

So, from all of you, I need details of suitable palces,. you need to tell me where you want to park. Needs to be practical, and not involve demolishing stuff, or forcing out other road users etc. Over to you, ask for it or lose it.

Thanks to all the uni dudes who came along

I got fined last week for parking on the footpath in Fort st.

I was quite wound up as the 2 nearest motorcycle parks were full!  The $40 will definitely result in a disgruntled letter to the council, which I've found out a few facts to support the need for more parking, or a few questions as well.

Does anyone know the rules for parking in pay and display car parks?  For free?  When I have parked in free, but time limit parks my moped has been moved onto the footpath! *grhh*  And another time cars haven't seen my bike and backed straight into it :(

Anyway I found out that 73,000 people commute into the city each day.  In the last 2yrs motorcycle and moped registrations have increased 25%, as opposed to cars only 5%, and we represent 3% of registered vehicles.  3% of the commuters into the city is about 2,000-2,500 motorcycles in the city each day, BUT there are 236 allocated parks by the council in the CBD; but the CBD also includes as far out as Newmarket, Parnell etc.

The question left is where the hell do we park if the infrastructure only supports less than 10% of us?!

I'm not sure where the 236 allocated parks are, but Auckland City Council run car parks are free for motorbikes and scooters.  I can park free in the Downtown park and there is a fair amount of space allocated for motorbikes.

The other two are Victoria St and Aotea Centre I think.

At Sylvia Park opposite the Westpac bank where it is designated bike parking, but I like to park on the top level right next to the doors under shelter.

Another secret park I will let you all in on is at St Lukes. If you enter the carpark from main entry on St Lukes Rd by the bus stop and turn right there is a loading zone and a drive way/tunnel on the left with a red box above it. If you go down there there is 1 park available that isn't designated a loading zone, just a secret park perfect for shopping at Foodtown or St Lukes during the busy season...

Any news on where this is at?

I got a warning stuck on my scooter when I parked alongside all the bikes between the pillars of the Gen-I building on Wyndam St. The warning said any bikes found parked there after Easter would be clamped.

This is a major bike parking spot in central Auckland so if all the bikes are forced from there the pressure on what little space is left available will be huge.

In the Durham St Wilson's carpark (off that side bit that goes below ground level on Albert St) bikes have been parking free in the corners where cars can't go. I parked there today and had a friendly chat to the parking guy about something quite unrelated - he didn't mention any problem with me (and others) parking there.

A work colleague called Wilson carparks. Currently they have no way of charging bikes so as long as we park well out of the way there's no problem. Not sure this is safe in all Wilson carparks but the Durham St one seems OK for now.

I work for Gen-i and will be moving to Wyndham Street offices after Easter and had heard that a harder line was going to be taken about the on pavement parking.

The thing I'm a little confused about is that surely the space between the pillars belongs to the building rather than it being a public area. In that case, I'd assume the Council would have no jurisdiction on the bikes at all (this assumes that you park so that no part of your bike protrudes beyond the footprint of the building).

At the Transport Committee meeting late last year (Auckland City Council), there was a large contingent of bikers who made submissions about the changes to the local bylaw and as I understand it, the Transport folk who introduced the local amendment are to go away and investigate this further.

So, it is not in place at this point as I understand it.
