How to kill a SP180 Runner!

So just had belts replaced at 31,000km service and on the way to work this morning honking down Hillsborough Road there was this awful noise - thought the belt broke but oh no! Front pulley disintergrated, destroyed the water pump and probably the crank as well.

Estimated cost of repairs about $2,000 so gonna gift the bike and get the spare parts for my boy Ben who's training to be a mechanic, nice little project for him!

Bugger what are you going to

Thats not high mileage! Why did pulley let go just after belt change?? Did you use a torque wrench when reassembling Peter?

I ask because in US they do not advocate rattle guns for reassembly only for loosening on these trannies.

Ok

That sounds positive for the four strokes Goetz. The only crankshaft prob I have read of on 4S was rattle gun damage.

As for KRoad, high speed pass may be safer on that one!!

Just as well I am not going

beside the slagging and all that ... there were Piaggio intern memos regards the set up of the Runner 180 and the weak spot on the crankshaft .... this disintegration issue is/was a worldwide phenomenon and lead to modifications and improvements of all set ups of variomatics in the Piaggio range ... but  "ssshhhhhhhh", not knowing that, it is much easier to point fingers at "bad mechanics"   ;-p

It's not uincommon, old mod.

I had 3 Runners with arround 30k mileage in the shop over the last 6 months with either fatigue in crankshaft or disintegrating pulleys.

Seems to be a "use by" date on the two stroke runners .... the clutch/pulley/crank set up on the four strokes is stronger ... have had no complaints there yet.

Hey    ....   i gotta ask the Trannies on K road if they like the use of a rattle gun ;-p !!!!!

looks like a black gts 250 to match mine, should be picking up later today, and sorry Mod Peter doesn't do repairs to his own bike Bob fitted the last lot of belts etc, but as an old hand at scooter repairs I am sure he did it right

its not about paying peanuts, it is about having the best mechanic for the job, as most people in the scooting community who have been around for a while know that Bob is one of the best mechanics around, he used to work for Malcolm at scooter world before it was sold to Kevin and I must say my first scooter which was diagnosed as irrepairable by kevin after a six week stay in scooter world  was actually fixed by Bob so he obvioulsly knew what he was talking about

i learned the trick to squeeze bananas into the gearbox of old cars to make it sound smooth for selling ....  had no luck to get them through the oil hole in a vespa yet :-(

Looking at the Runner Bubu with a laughing and a crying eye  - sorry about the misshap, Peter it's a pitty especially for Ben, that it is such a mechanical failure - but it will be a great learning experience for him to set that thing right.

I am happy to FINALLY see Peter on a GTS - damn that bike suits him so much better !!!! and it saves you from having to borrow your daughters scooter for the upcoming tour !!!  .. might even put a smile on his face for a change (rumour is that someone saw him smiling when he picked the bike up yesterday)

i gotta join the line then too ... as i had 3 of disintegrating crankshafts and variomatics in the last year ... all at about the 30k mark ...  guess there are just no good mechanics in New Zealand who can keep up with those high standarts ... we all suck :-(

My previous comment was made with humorous intent. If by some small chance it reads otherwise I apoligise.I do my own maintainance, if this was not the case I would`nt hesatate to use Goetz`s shop.
