I agree completely. I find that the younger hoons are the ones most likely to be risky to me as a rider. I also find that the same hoons appear to be the worst drivers. It would be great to sort that out, although I suspect that the gov will stop short of Electro Shock Therapy!!

As for the give way rule, it is about time!!

It is unbelievable that it has taken the "pollies" this long to correct a road rule that no one could understand.
A major factor contributing to many motorcycle accidents, including mine. Lets hope they include 3rd. party as well or is that expecting too much from that band of morrons. johnD

this is more confusing then then signal light use at a rndabout

what is the age we can drive at now 8, I tought it was 16, what exactly are they changing about the give way rule, I have never been sure I understood the last one as I got different opinions from whoever I asked,..they must be confused from the last change...imagine what will happen now.......weight ratio???? does this mean only fat guys can ride Harleys????where is Iona when you need her.....off looking at garters...
I was passed yesterday by a very young women in a red Holden, I couldn't figure if it was poor judgement to own a red car, a holden or to pass me in that spot, or was the poor judgement based on age, driving a red car or owning a Holden. In my experience they are all dangerous.
This goverment is confusing the shit out of me, first they raise the GST then they say they will offset it by lowering taxes, raising pensions and benefits, so it will not affect anyone, so why bother John???? Do they think we are stupid or something???? I am glad that they lowered it from six beers to 4 before you can drive or something like that...

third party is the first thing they should change.....

9 beers in 90 minutes

and you're ok. i don't think they are intending to reduce the blood alcohol limits of voters because "there is general acceptance of the current restrictions"

which i think translates to "we aren't stupid enough to make the roads safer if people won't vote for us"

I think the power to weight ratio is a great idea, a burger 400cc produces less power than an aprilia rs250 2smoke with all the go fast bits.

Burger 400cc at 30-35hp? Illegal on a learner licence.

Aprilia RS250 50-75hp with go fast bits--legal on a learner licence.

big old scoots/bikes make less power than new machines.

I dont mean to be rude but continually I here people on the radio and TV saying that they cant understand the give way rule....get real it pretty simple and its just a rule, learn it or get off the road!! sure it's a dumb rule and has lead to countless accidents but its pretty simple and if you cant figure it out WTF i say. generally it seems to be people that remember the old rule pre 77 the fraze cant teach an old dog new tricks comes to mind!!

ok you are stopped at yields signs, facing each other

your intention is to go straight through, they are signalling right, who has the right of way? I think this is where the confusion lies because this does not make a lot of sense nor is their any advantage. I think it makes sense, and I like the rule when you are getting off the center of a main road to give way to those with the harder turn on your right and sitting in the most dangerous position, this also ensures that traffic does not get backed up. Have they also once changed the signalling rules at roundabouts as I am constantly seeing people going through these first signaling left then right and what they were intending, was to go straight through which required no signal. That couldn;'t be simpler, turning right, signal right, turning left, signal left, going straight through no signal yet a lot of people get that messed up, putting themselves and others at risk, so I am guessing it has changed at some point??

Perhaps we should {lambretta} go back to the old days of licence renewal {on} every 5 years or so. New {trademe} theory test and {rebuilt and} eyesight test to {almost finished} keep nz drivers basic skill up.

But that will {I'm tempted} never happen {but no dosh} because 90% of new zealand drivers {why do I like lamies?} think they could win{GP 150} the world rally championship if only ...

Hmmmm....http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=275483256

I'm with Lux Interior - I don't get why people keep going on about the give way rule being confusing.... maybe I'm not getting something...
I don't think it works very well at times but its not confusing.
I think the downside of the alternative give way rule, which I found driving oversea,s is you get end up with loads of no turning right signs every where which often means you have to do 3 lefts to get to where you want to go.

I love the smell of 2 stroke in the morning

That rule ???

How come the powers that be in this country that dictate what the road rules will be, know better than other countries.
Ask any foreign tourist what they think about driving in this country. Not good. No other country has this illogical rh rule rule. johnD

I simplest rule in the road code is keep left, it seems to hard for many.
As far as tourists go I think the general lack of any driving standards give them more to comment on than a simple rule of give way. Just go camping in a van and have a chat to other campers, generally I hear "bountiful country, nice people its just a pity how they drive"

The fact that comment will get peoples backs up says more about NZ than the tourists IMHO.
Auckland on Friday arvo is no different than rush hour in India.
