GS160 MkII

Posted August 18th, 2010 by netcando

The new project. 1964 GS160 MkII. This is pretty much trick photography, as the engine is in a million rusty bits in a bucket and the frame needs some attention around the foot plate.
Will start a long term restoration, and maybe by Christmas 2011 it will be ready to ride.
Seemed to me it was a shame to leave it lying in a shed, and hopefully, with a lot of help from the hammer man Goetz, I'll do it justice.

That scooter has the best arse in the business!!
Sure does.
Look forward to the day we can line two of them up together for a photo shoot.

Wow! Very nice.
Where did you get it from?
Is there much rust? Does it need repainting?
Tell us more!

Scored it on Trademe, and was lucky to be the first to make contact.
There isn't much rust, but will have to uncover the core at the front to make sure no structural damage, as a plate welded on over 10 years ago has started to rust aaway. The back and side covers are all in excellent condition, and all the important bits are intact. Horn casing will need replacing or some panel work.
Seems the engine parts are all there, but they have been stored in a damp shed for 5+ years, and will require quite a bit of reconditioning, and possibly lots of replacement parts.
I have decided to try and learn as much about the engine as possible, and will slowly work on descaling/derusting the head and block, and other parts, or might take them somewhere with a dipping bath, or bead blast. Not sure what's best.
Will evetually bead blast the frame too, and get a recoat. But, as mentioned before, have to sell the Sportique first.
Appreciate any tips from others who have done restorations.
Whoops, that got a bit long ;-)

Awesome.
I started on my Super a few weeks ago. It has temporarily donated its motor to the Sportique so I thought it was a good time to take the 1st step.
It's completely stripped with parts photographed and labeled so I know where they come from. I learnt a lot just from this process.
The frame needs a lot of work. It is twisted and a few dents here and there but there doesn't seem to be too much rust.
I have investigated bead blasting. There are mobile guys who come to you but they make quite a mess and have a minimum charge out rate of $300. There are a crowd in Onehunga who can blast or acid dip (who without looking at the scoot) estimated about $100. STill tossing up wether I'll paint it myself or not. I'm worried I'll be disappointed if it's not perfect after all the work & money that will be put into it. But then again painting is so expensive to get pros to do.
So while all thats going on I'm going to recondition the Sportique engine. I have no experience here either. There is a guy in the UK who has put out some instructional DVDs that I'm thinking of investing in.

So the race is on for Xmas 2011!

Hey, it would be great to come and tinker, or vice versa, if you want another pair of unskilled, but enthusiastic hands.
I found a GS and SS book as a PDF online which had the exploded engine view, and instructions on dismantling, and am trying to do an inventory of parts. Can already see a few things missing, and reassembling a clutch might really stretch my knowledge, but no gain without strain, or whatever it is...
